The frontispiece is a reproduction of a photograph of Rimbaud in Harrar in 1883.

"It was in 1927, in the basement of a sad house in Brooklyn, that I first heard Rimbaud's name. I was thirty-six at the time and still immersed in the depths of my late, long Saison en Enfer. An absorbing book on Rimbaud was lying around the house, but I didn't give it a minute's attention. I hated the woman who owned it and who was living with us at the time. Physically and morally, I learned later, she resembled Rimbaud as much as it is possible to imagine."
