BEAUTIFUL AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED  addressed to Max-Pol Fouchet, director of the review Fountain.

"Paris, 20 September 1962

Dear Max-Pol,

Under a wisteria in St Cyirq (where in summer you'd all be sitting at mealtimes), I found myself the object of unusual attention and thoughtfulness from strangers, and it didn't take me long to learn that I owed it all to you. As luck would have it, Joyce Mansour was careful to catch as many of your sentences as possible as she listened to you, and transcribed them for me: I'm still deeply moved.
Since then, she and many others have returned to it, with the aim of returning to me, beyond the words, the human fire that passed through it. I've listened to you long enough (although far too long ago in the physical sense of the term), and your unique intonations (even more of thought and judgement than of voice) continue to delight my inner ear so that I don't have too much trouble making up for the most vivid part of the hearing, the movement of the heart that I know, starting with you, how far it is capable of going...

Where, Max-Pol, are our evening meetings, which I already thought were for lack of anything better, in this living room where I was obsessed every time with the number of birds that a cat - called 'Charmant' - had managed to harm in the aviary? You and I agreed that we wouldn't stop there. Since then, I think I've mainly been afraid of imposing extra costs on you, in a life that, unlike mine, has not spared the slightest hollow.
Any effusion in this thank you from your friend
André Breton
