The seminal novel of postmodernism, Gravity's Rainbow won the National Book Award for 1974 and the prestigious William Dean Howells Medal, awarded for the best American novel published over a five-year period; the jury for the Pullitzer Prize, on the other hand, judged it to be "unreadable" and even "obscene": the fiction prize was not awarded that year.
