Description
VERY RARE ORIGINAL SELF-PORTRAIT SIGNED COLETTE.
Large profile in black ink with this autograph note at the foot:
"Didn't I have a career at the end of this pen?
Let me hope so...
Colette 1953".
According to Frédéric Maget, this drawing is one of only six original self-portraits of the writer known to exist.
These include:
- from the collection of the Musée Tomi Ungerer in Strasbourg, a profile drawing for the Gringoire published 19 July 1929.
- from the Gerald Schurr collection, exhibited in Cincinnati, 1989 (no. 41).
- the one in the Paul Morand collection: a simple unsigned sketch scribbled on torn blue paper and captioned by Morand: Portrait of Colette by herself 28. J. 27 P. Morand .
- from the collection of Pierre and Franca Belfond (reproduced in Drawings by writers . Paris, Éditions du Chêne, 2003), which was hotly contested when the collection was sold in February 2012.
A valuable document.
