I've been very seriously ill (in clinics, with penicillin, punctures, etc.).<br \/>\nAll these persecutions seem to be coming to an end. The latest one, trigeminal neuralgia, is receding under the active prodding of Prof. Aubri.<br \/>\nHow are you? Where are you now? In 3 or 4 days I'll be presentable.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely<br \/>\nRen\u00e9 Char<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ren\u00e9 Char joined the Resistance in 1942 under the name of \"Capitaine Alexandre\". Revolted by the censorship of Vichy and Berlin, he vowed not to publish his poems in occupied France. Nevertheless, from 1944 he contributed to the review <em>Fountain <\/em>led by Max-Pol Fouchet, based in Algiers and resolutely hostile to the Vichy regime. Char remained loyal to<em> Fountain<\/em> when, after the Liberation, the magazine moved to Paris, and contributed to 5 of its issues, not only as a poet but also as a columnist. <em>Fountain<\/em> published, among other things, the first extracts from<em> Hypnos Leaves<\/em> (1945) and<em> The pulverised poem<\/em> (1947).<br \/>\nMax-Pol Fouchet, with whom Char kept up an extensive correspondence, described him as \"a great poet, a master of dignity, freedom and rectitude, a master whose morals married his poetry and whose poetry married his morals\" (Jacques Chirac, \"Ren\u00e9 Char\"), <em>La revue des deux mondes<\/em>July 1989, p. 17)<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It's been a long time since I've been able to reach you or give you any sign.
