René Maublanc (1891-1960) became involved with the Ligue des droits de l'homme (Human Rights League) in 1917 and passed his agrégation in philosophy in 1919. He was soon sidelined from teaching because of his trade union involvement, but was appointed secretary-archivist at the Centre de Documentation Sociale de l'École Normale Supérieure, where he developed the Charles Fourier archives. In 1920, he discovered unanimism through André Cuisenier, who also introduced him to Jules Romains, whom he met for the first time in the summer of 1921. René Maublanc became part of the writer's inner circle and contributed to his scientific, literary and artistic work.
In 1923, René Maublanc took over the management of the Reims-based magazine, Le Pampre, the antechamber of the Grand Jeu, and publishes Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, Roger Vailland and René Daumal.

He returned to teaching in 1934, joining the Lycée Henry IV in 1936, while continuing to publish fiction, literary works and political texts. Close to the Communist Party, René Maublanc was extremely active in a group of Marxist intellectuals including Paul Langevin, Henri Wallon, Marcel Prenant and Marcel Cohen. From 1942, he joined the active resistance and became director of the Free University in autumn 1943, after the execution of the magazine's founders, Georges Politzer, Jacques Decour and Jacques Solomon.
