Description

PREPARATORY AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT IN TWO HANDS WITH NOTES FOR PRINTING.

The two indexes together - General alphabetical index of individual biographical noteses - 1 pages - and General alphabetical index of names cited - 4 pages - (names of 214 personalities and corresponding pages) - is in the handwriting of Maxime Vuillaume, who says: " the underlined name is that of a member of the municipality".
Charles Péguy has annotated a full page of remarks for the printer and a few corrections in the text:
"Compare the two tables exactly as the indexes - corresponding index of the seventh is previous Vuillaume"
"To save forty-eight hours, put them on the page directly - two good proofs and a copy for me at Lozère and nothing for Vuillaume".
"current titles of the second on thin fillet, general alphabetical index of proper names cited".
"You will put the folios i1 i2 i3 i4 etc and not in pencil but the folios composed in typography and not really in their place".

These pages correspond to pages 146-150 of the Last Series booklet of Cahiers Rouges by Maxime Vuillaume (XIth series - ninth volume dated 1910), which closes with a general index.
In February 1908, at the insistence of Lucien Descaves, Péguy began to publish My Red Notebooks , notes and memoirs of a former communard, Maxime Vuillaume. The first three volumes are the most sensational documents in the IXth series of the Notebooks.
The entire text was then gradually published by Péguy over a period of six years. It is now considered to be one of the most important testimonies on the subject.

The original two-volume edition was published by Ollendorf in 1910 under the title My Red Notebooks at the time of the Commune, after Péguy terminated his publishing rights. The manuscript is full of the receipt countersigned by Charles Péguy from the sale of Cahiers Rouges to Ollendorff, dated 2 June 1910, for the sum of 450 francs
