The collection opens with the famous poetic short story Sylvie from the August 1853 issue of the Revue des Deux Mondes (27 pages).  This text, which Nerval considered to be his best prose, was subsequently published in volume form in 1854 in The Daughters of Fire.
This is followed by two Scenes from oriental life, The Druses, from the August 1847 issue (50 pages) and The Akkals - Anti-Lebanonfrom the October 1847 issue (28 pages).

Bookplate of the famous Victorian theatre-maker Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901), whose life was a veritable success story. From a modest background, he made his fortune in English comic opera and created the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as well as the theatre state-of-the-art Savoy. He also managed a number of luxury hotels and palaces.
