Description

ORIGINAL EDITIONS in large paper of the three volumes forming the complete collection of these famous literary pastiches.

A rare complete collection of these two-handed literary pastiches, which, according to R. Escholier "surpass, in finesse and depth, the best literary criticism"; that will go down in the history of literature.
But success was not immediate. The first volume, published by Éditions de la Revue Les Lettres, had difficulty selling, and the stock was initially bought back by the Revue Blanche when the overpriced Lettres du directeur Paul Reboux closed (a label replaced the publisher's name on purchased copies). To publish the sequel, the authors turned to Juven, who refused. Reboux asked Grasset to do them a favour and, as well as agreeing, Grasset organised an extraordinary promotional campaign. The operation was a great success and enabled Grasset to finally publish some great authors.

1908- 1st SERIES, : ONE OF THE FIRST 17 COPIES ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER INSETSU-KIOKOfollowed by 20 copies on Hollande.

Copy number 1 signed on the colophon by Paul Reboux and Charles Müller. The copy has the original cover with the Published by Revue Les Lettres.

1910 - 2nd SERIES ONE OF 20 EXEMPLIES ON HOLLAND, the only large paper edition.
Grasset then published the rest of the pastiches, taking care to precede this second series with a reprint of the first.

19013 - 3rd SERIES ONE OF THE FIRST 5 COPIES ON JAPON IMPÉRIALfollowed by 30 copies on Hollande and 500 copies on Simili-Japon.

Charles Müller was wounded by a German artillery shell at Longueval on 26 September 1914. Reboux continued on his own, even though the following volumes no longer have the same flavour,  In the style of... sold almost 400,000 copies until 1950.

enclosed :ONE OF HIS LAST LETTERS FROM CHARLES MÜLLER
autograph card signed to his brother Louis Muller
Format 140 x 90 mm, graphite. On a correspondence card from the Armies of the Republic
«7 September 1914, First of all, good morning. Then, old Louis, would you like to thank on my behalf the kind colleagues who so kindly announced my promotion. If they ask you for details, you can tell them that I didn't do anything more than the others.
As luck would have it, I was posted to a fairly exposed spot where I held out for as long as I was told. All the soldiers and those of my comrades who were under my command experienced exactly the same risks as I did. All I had to show for it was my coolness and some ingenuity in the combat systems.
On the other hand, there's nothing to shout about. Every day there are feats of arms that are certainly more impressive than this one. May this letter reach you at last. For you
and send you all my love and affection. Your old Charles."

A rare and beautiful set.
