The author's second and final novel, it follows on from Une Petite Demoiselle published 11 years earlier. "The work was being printed and the first proofs corrected when the author was surprised by death on 11 December 1921."
After receiving the book, Proust wrote to Henri Pinard, the testamentary legatee of the author of Blue Hydrangeas : "The adjective posthumous is ill-suited to what concerns Monsieur de Montesquiou. Never dead nor alive seemed so alive to me".
