Description

COMPLETE AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of this one-act comedy-vaudeville by Labiche and Marc-Michel, performed at the Palais-Royal on 1 May 1852 by Sainville as Mouillebouche and Pellerin as Tropical. It was subsequently published by Michel Lévy frères in volume III of the author's works.

A two-character play in which the young Tropical has kidnapped Mouillebouche on his wedding day, whom he believes to be his rival, but who was in fact remarrying. He holds him captive and soon realises that the woman he loves is Mouillebouche's ward, but he will only release her when he has obtained the hand of young Bérénice, not without difficulty, by blowing into Mouillebouche's eye, burnt by plaster that has fallen off during an escape attempt.

The manuscript is entirely in Labiche's handwriting. with the exception of a few verses, which were added after the fact by Marc-Michel; it contains erasures and corrections, with some passages crossed out and deleted but legible, and a few marginal additions.

Elegantly produced manuscript in a Bradel-style full violet cloth binding by the Devauchelle workshops.
