Chester Himes entered literature while serving a prison sentence for armed robbery at the Ohio Penitentiary. Released in 1935, he began writing Cast the First Stone, an account of his prison experience. This was the author's first novel (the theme of racial injustice is still curiously absent), but it was not published until around ten years later. In order to get the manuscript accepted, Himes reworked it entirely, switching from the 3rd to the 1st person. The first version of the text was the subject of a restored edition, published in 1998 under the title Yesterday Will Make You Cry.
Cast the First Stone was published in France in 1978 (Let them cast the first stone, Guénaud) ; Yesterday Will Make you Cry will also be translated into French (Yesterday will make you cry(Paris: Gallimard, coll. La Noire, 2002)
