Zoaques premiered on 5 November 1906 at the Théâtre Antoine and was a great critical success. On the eve of the final performance, however, the lead actor quit the company. Sacha Guitry was forced to replace him at short notice, and thus starred for the first time in a play he had written. "That evening I had the very clear feeling that in the future I was going to be able to play my pieces very well. I'm not saying "play them very well": I'm saying: play them very well."
