A copy probably reserved for the press (stamped on the back cover) with this butterfly pasted on the false title: "Under the title Préfaces et Manifestes littéraires (Prefaces and Literary Manifestos), the Bibliothèque Charpentier publishes a summary of the Goncourt brothers' literary endeavours and an almost indispensable complement to the Journal. They are like bulletins of the battles that, for nearly forty years, the two brothers have waged on the terrain of the novel, history, theatre and French and Japanese art."

Bound in contemporary style. Red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and richly decorated with gilt box, fleurons and fillets, gilt title with date at foot, double fillets on covers, gilt head, bookmark, covers preserved. Light spotting at the beginning and end of the book.
