Description

Second edition published three years after the original.

Copy of the bibliophile Henry Roujon (1853-1914), private secretary to Jules Ferry, a friend of Mallarmé and Renoir, director of the Beaux-Arts department from 1891 and then Permanent Secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1903. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1911.

It is enriched:

  • an autograph letter signed by Judith Gautier to the same:

"Thank you, thank you
dear friend, the very good news has reached me through dear Marras, messenger of the Grail, who will tell you how proud the Petit Théâtre* is and how it is making a mockery of the Opéra. The director would like to give you a kiss and hopes to see you soon at a forthcoming performance.
I shake your hands in anticipation and give you thanks with all my heart.

*Judith Gautier adapted the "mystery" A tear from the devil for his Petit Théâtre de marionnettes in 1897

  • with a rare original signed watercolour by Judith Gautier sent in the New Year, depicting a sailing ship at dusk with gold lettering on its sails.Happy New Year".
    An identical watercolour greetings card was shown in 1984 at the Maison de Balzac, during the Exhibition of Drawings by 19th-century French writers (n° 47).

Born in Paris on August 25, 1845 and died in Saint-Énogat (now Dinard) on December 26, 1917.
