The idea for this faithful portrayal of the cosmopolitan mores of the 19th century was described by Bourget in his diary as early as 1892: "Cosmopolis should sum up the bulk of my experience as a traveller and mark the development that can be drawn from travel today.". Like all Paul Bourget publications since the success of Disciplewas very well received. According to Francisque Sarcey "Cosmopolis is [...] the most interesting and complete work he has written to date"; a glowing review by André Theuriet even made the front page of Quotidien, Littéraire, Artistique et Politique, Le Journal run by Fernand Xau. Several thousand copies of the book were sold immediately after its publication.
