This text was first published on 1 December 1945 in No. 3 of the fledgling review Modern TimesThis was two months after Jean-Paul Sartre's famous lecture on 29 October 1945, Is existentialism a humanism? A true profession of faith in existentialism, this text by Simone de Beauvoir had a real influence on that of Sartre, who published it in 1946 under a similar title, but this time affirmative: Existentialism is a humanisme, (Collection pensées, Nagel, 1946).
For Beauvoir, publication in book form, with the same publisher and in the same collection, had to wait three years.
