Rare ORIGINAL EDITION dated 1839.

The book, which went on sale by the publisher on 3 November 1839 and sold very little, was republished with new title pages at the beginning of 1840.

Roman à clefs published in serial form in Le Siècle in April and May 1839, then reworked and expanded with a preface for the volume edition. According to Carteret, the characters in the novel were played by people close to the author: Camille Maupin (George Sand), the Marquise de Rochefide (the Countess d'Agoult), Claude Vignon (Gustave Planche) and Conti (Listz).

Bound in the early 20th century in long-grained garnet half-maroquin, spine ribbed and decorated with friezes, fillets and gilt and blind fleurons. Cover and spine not preserved. Light spotting at the beginning and end of each volume.
