Description

Very fine Touraine edition by Mame et Fils, Pontificaux publishers.

For the first time, this publishing house printed The life of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Edition Nationale, a major work executed by James Tissot at the end of his life.
In 1888, James Tissot was seized by a mystical revelation that took him to Palestine and Jerusalem, where he brought back 365 gouaches, the basis of his internationally acclaimed book.
Maison Mame continued to use these illustrations even after the artist's death in 1902. In 1908, for example, it published a smaller version of this Missal of the Life of Jesus Christ with black illustrations framing the text and full-page colour reproductions.

A VERY GOOD BINDING BY MARCEL BAILLY, who was Paul Bonet's official gilder for many years.
The gilding framing the mosaic crosses on the back covers is reminiscent of the radiant gilding on Bonet's bindings.
This copy features a coloured gouache attributable to James Tissot. Very applied detail of a stained glass window, partially in colour.
