One of the most iconic books ever illustrated by Mathurin Méheut. The book was produced by the artist from drawings he made during the two years he spent at the Roscoffet biological station. The painter, decorator and art critic Maurice Pillard-Verneuil (1869-1942), who had already published in 1903 in the same collection Study of the plant, directed the publication.
Numerous two-tone compositions in the text and 50 colour plates. A second edition was published in 1924.
