We are pleased to present an exceptional collection from the personal papers of dust jacket illustrator Jean des Vignes, who worked with various New York based publishers in thirties, forties and fifties.
The collection includes 26 original drawings for dust jackets, 17 original drawings for illustrations (magazines and books), and over 200 printed dust jackets in fine condition.
Jean des Vignes collaborated with publishers Phoenix, Gramercy, Dutton, and Macmillan on nearly a hundred pulp crime, erotica, and romance novels, creating dust jacket illustrations for Gore Vidal’s only work published under a pseudonym, as well as for Kathleen Winsor’s Forever Amber, which sold over 3 million copies.
He also provided nearly twenty illustrations for Edna McGuire’s children’s history textbook The Story of American Freedom, painting a rather rosy picture of Native-colonizer relationships.
Included are a few uncommercialized samples, like partially unprinted dust jackets, unclipped dust jackets featuring several possible prices, and a dust jacket with an alternative title.
