French chemist known for his work on fatty acids, saponification and the discovery of stearin. This work earned him the Copley Medal in 1857.

Appointed director of the Gobelins factory in 1813, he based his dyeing work on research into colour perception. In his book The law of simultaneous colour contrasts principles that had a lasting influence on painters. He also designed a colour atlas indexed on Fraunhofer lines.

Lord of Saane, Captain then Admiral in the French Navy for almost 50 years, he retired to his lands in the Cotentin region. A great hunter, he is the author of only one book published in the Wolf hunt (1566, Paris, J. Du Puys), his treatise on navigation and shipbuilding was never printed.
